'Cutting Loose' The Documentary Shorts Winning Film at Encounters Short Film & Animation Festival 2012
A story that was entirely fresh (a prison's hairdressing championships), great photography and extraordinary access but it was the central protagonist, Frances, whose dignity and eloquence so moved me. I was left hanging on every moment…not to find out who had won, but in the hope that one man would escape the relentless cycle of prison and re-offending. To date he has.
Finlay had this to say:
"It was completely overwhelming listening to what the jurors thought about the film. They verbalised (better than we would ever be able to) exactly what we wanted to get across with the film. To have one of your heroes Kim Longinotto tell you she cried watching my film was quite surreal.
It is the first award we were able to personally pick up and to have the main character Francis Duffy and his Mum Lilly in attendance too was such a special moment that we won't forget in a hurry. Without Francis the film would not be what it is today - he was a gift to make the film with.
Thank you so much to Encounters and Icon films for making this award happen and looking after me so well."
